Hydroponics

The Aquila School's hydroponics farm is a state-of-the-art facility that uses a nutrient-rich water solution instead of soil to grow plants

The Sustainable Farm

The farm is located on the school campus and is used to teach pupils about sustainable food production.

The farm grows a variety of fruits and vegetables, including peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, eggplants, herbs, and cucumbers. The produce is used in food technology lessons and is also sometimes sold to the school community.

Pupils enjoy learning about how the farm works and they are proud to help grow the produce. The farm also provides pupils with the opportunity to learn about environmental issues and to develop their entrepreneurial skills.

The hydroponics farm is home to fish, rabbits and birds (including parrots) - making a visit the highlight of any visitor's day.

Greenhouse

The school's greenhouses will be an extension to the cooking rooms, providing pupils with the opportunity to grow their own ingredients as part of their food technology lessons. This allows pupils to experience the full food cycle, from seed to plate, and to learn about the importance of sustainable food production.

Pupils can grow a wide variety of crops in the greenhouse, which gives them the flexibility to experiment with different recipes and to create their own unique dishes.

The greenhouse is also a valuable educational resource for pupils. It provides them with the opportunity to learn about plant science, nutrition, and environmental sustainability.

Vertical UV Garden

As our new building opens, our oldest children will see us fuse the learning from our hydroponics and green house with technology, as they utilise our vertical UV garden. Driven by STEM and supported by sustainability, our vertical UV garden shows pupils how this type of farming can have many positives, such as:

  • Year-round production: farms can produce food year-round, regardless of the weather conditions outside.
  • Greater control: farmers have greater control over the environment in which their plants are growing, such as the temperature, humidity, and light levels. This allows them to optimise the growing conditions for each crop, resulting in higher yields and better quality produce.
  • Reduced use of pesticides: Indoor hydroponics farmers are less likely to need to use pesticides than outdoor farmers, as the controlled environment helps to reduce the risk of pests and diseases.
Our vertical UV garden can be used to grow a wide variety of crops, including fruits, vegetables, herbs, and even flowers. They are often used to produce high-value crops, such as strawberries, tomatoes, and leafy greens.
